RNG Determines the Outcome

This is why the spinning animation you see shouldn’t be interpreted as physically determining where the symbols will actually land. The reels are just a visual representation of the result generated by the software. Unlike a mechanical slot, there is no physical reel that slows down and eventually lands.

RTP Describes a Long-Term Percentage
Return to player, or RTP, is one of the most commonly displayed figures associated with slot mathematics. A game with a theoretical RTP of 96% is designed to return 96 units for every 100 wagered across its mathematical lifetime. The remaining four units represent the house advantage.
The important point here is scale. RTP does not mean somebody wagering £100 should expect to finish with £96 every time they play. The percentage is calculated over a massive number of game rounds, so an individual’s results can differ substantially during a single session or even across many sessions.
Some games also offer different RTP configurations. Operators may be able to select from approved versions, meaning two seemingly identical copies of the same title do not always have the same theoretical return. Checking the game’s information screen is much more reliable than assuming that the published RTP applies at all casinos.
Volatility Describes the Distribution of Results
Two slots can have identical RTP percentages but produce very different outcome patterns. Volatility, also known as variance, describes this aspect of the mathematical model. It focuses on how wins and their sizes are distributed, not just the overall theoretical return.
A lower-volatility game is generally designed to produce smaller wins more frequently. Higher-volatility games tend to concentrate more of their theoretical return into less frequent but potentially larger outcomes. Medium-volatility titles sit, as the name suggests, in the middle.
Hit Frequency Matters Too
Hit frequency measures how often a game produces a result classified as a win. If a slot has a theoretical hit frequency of 25%, that doesn’t mean precisely one in every four consecutive rounds will win. Instead, it describes the expected proportion across the mathematical model.
A winning result also does not necessarily mean a net profit on that round. A game could return less than the original wager while still recording the outcome as a win for statistical purposes.
These figures describe different parts of the same mathematical system. RTP is the theoretical long-term return, volatility is how that return is distributed, and hit frequency is how often qualifying winning outcomes occur.
Random Does Not Mean No Structure
Modern slots combine randomness with carefully constructed mathematics. The RNG means outcomes are unpredictable, but developers set reel weightings, paytables, feature probabilities, and other rules that define the range and frequency of possible results. Certification and regulatory testing verify that the implemented software operates according to the required standards.
Paylines and newer alternatives then determine how the resulting symbols are evaluated, while RTP, volatility, and hit frequency describe different characteristics of the mathematical model. Understanding those differences gives a clearer picture of what is happening behind the on-screen animation. While it can’t give your winning chances a boost, it can allow you to appreciate just what slot games involve.
